Beyond the expected
Beautiful places are easy to show. I want to share the Venice that stays with you.
We may stand beneath the mosaics of St Mark’s, enter the rooms where the Republic governed, or cross a quiet residential campo. The itinerary matters — but so do conversation, curiosity and the pleasure of having time.

Reading Venice’s Sacred and Political Heart

There is a difference between seeing St Mark’s Basilica and understanding what it was made to do.
After the doors close and the movement of the day subsides, St Mark’s can be experienced differently: not simply as one of the world’s most extraordinary monuments, but as a place where architecture, images, ritual, light and political power were brought together to give visible form to an idea of Venice.
Built beside the Doge’s Palace as the ducal chapel of the Venetian Republic, the basilica was never merely a magnificent setting for worship. Here, the sacred and the political continually met. The Evangelist’s presence, the imagery of the mosaics, the organisation of space and the ceremonies performed within it all participated in the construction of Venetian identity.
The experience
We begin where St Mark’s itself begins: with Venice. Outside the basilica, we reconstruct the world that produced it — the Republic, the Doge, the arrival and presence of St Mark, and the extraordinary relationship between sacred and political space in the Piazza.
Approximately 30 minutesInside, the questions raised in the square take visible form. We read the building’s five-domed plan, its processional direction, its changing light and the way architecture organised the encounter between the Doge, the state, the sacred and the people.
Rather than moving from masterpiece to masterpiece, we ask why particular images occupy particular places. The mosaics become a visual order: biblical history, the presence of the Evangelist and Venice’s understanding of its own place in time.
We consider how ceremonies animated the basilica and transformed architecture into lived space. In the stillness of the evening, the gold is no longer simply decoration: it becomes light, atmosphere and meaning.

Your guide
I’m Romy — a Venetian and a licensed guide since 2016. For me, guiding is not simply about knowing the city, but about helping another person truly encounter it.
My way of reading Venice grew from years of study. At Ca’ Foscari University, I graduated with honours in Languages and Anglo-American and Hispano-American Literatures, and later earned a Master’s degree with honours in History of the Arts and Conservation of Cultural Heritage. I then completed a postgraduate diploma in Theological Hermeneutics of Christian Art at the Theological Faculty of Central Italy, also with honours.
These different paths — languages, literature, art history and the theological hermeneutics of Christian art — allow me to connect places with the ideas, rituals and human stories that gave them meaning. Yet our time together remains personal and effortless: a genuine conversation, paced around you, in the city that has formed my gaze.
